GENERAL INFORMATION
CLIMATE:
Vienna has a temperate continental climate. During the conference period, expect pleasant and mild weather. Average daytime temperatures range from 18°C to 24°C (64°F to 75°F). Evenings can be cooler, so a light jacket or sweater is recommended.
SAFETY:
Vienna is consistently ranked one of the safest cities in the world. The city has a very low crime rate, and public areas, including the airport and public transport, are secure and well-monitored. Standard vigilance for personal belongings is always advised.
CURRENCY:
The currency used in Singapore is the Euro (€). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but it is always useful to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases, especially in traditional markets or cafes.
LANGUAGE:
The official language is German. However, English is widely spoken, especially in the tourism, hospitality, and academic sectors. You will have no trouble communicating at the airport, hotels, and most restaurants.
TRANSPORTATION:
Vienna boasts an exceptional public transportation system (Wiener Linien). While the conference venue is at the airport, exploring the city is easy with the U-Bahn (subway), trams, and buses. The City Airport Train (CAT) provides the fastest link between the airport and the city center (Wien Mitte).
LOCAL CUISINE:
Vienna is famous for its culinary delights. Be sure to try a traditional Wiener Schnitzel, enjoy a slice of Sachertorte in a historic coffee house, or visit a Heuriger (a traditional wine tavern) on the outskirts of the city. The airport itself also offers a variety of high-quality dining options.
CULTURAL TIPS:
Viennese culture values formality and punctuality. A polite "Guten Tag" (Good day) goes a long way. When entering a traditional coffee house or restaurant, it is customary to greet the staff. Service can be less rushed than in other cultures; to ask for the bill, make eye contact and make a writing motion in the air.
